What on earth am I doing?
He'd sworn to avoid such a situation. D.J. was poison to him. He hadn't waited all these years to find the woman he would spend his life loving to ruin his dream with a casual affair. The certainty an affair was all D.J. would ever want from him made Chris equally certain an affair would be all he could ever give herand he needed so much more than that.
He pulled away, reaching up to unclasp her fingers from around his neck. D.J.'s eyes drifted open, and she smiled at him, tightening her fingers upon his. Chris's heart turned over at the innocence of her expression. Her lips were swollen from his kiss, her hair a halo of red, curling fire about her head.
Dear God, she's so beautiful. Why does doing the right thing have to be so damn hard?
His expression must have alerted her to the direction of his thoughts, for D.J. stiffened and pulled her fingers from his. "What's the matter?"
"Nothing." He turned away and retraced his steps to the door. "I'm sorry. That shouldn't have happened."
She stared at him for a moment, shock evident on her face. Then the cool mask he'd come to know so well fell into place, and her eyes narrowed with anger. "It was a kiss, McCall." He flinched at the sarcasm she put into his last name, remembering how she'd whispered "Christian" just before she'd kissed him. "You don't have to act like I assaulted you. You're the one who was playing 'Peeping Tom.'''
